Ever since the Taurus took a nose dive a few years ago, Ford has been looking for a suitable replacement to challenge the Accord and Camry in the mid-sized car segment.People are really starting to notice the new Hybrid power plant modification in the Fusion.  Ford officially released the Fusion Hybrid recently at the Los Angeles Auto Show late in 2008.The excellent in-town gas mileage is what makes the Ford Fusion Hybrid so unique.  The EPA rates the Hybrid at 41 MPG which bests the Camry by 8 MPG and even outshines the Civic Hybrid by 1 MPG in the city;  a great feat for a mid-sized sedan.  The Fusion’s electric engine can power the car up to 47 MPH without any help from the gas engine.  Already there have been many automotive magazines that have employed this system to achieve much better MPG ratings then the EPA estimates.

By using new technology, the Fusion can help drivers know which driving style recieves the best fuel economy.  They have created an ingenious system which is built into the instrument cluster called the SmartGauge.  There are 2 LCD screens located one on each side of the speedo which display 4 different information screens.  The first screen shows the fuel level and the level of power left in the batteries.  The second data screen adds an electric vehicle mode indicator and RPM Tach.  The third screen displays engine and battery output power.  The fourth and final data screen shows power to the wheels and accessory power consumption.  All data screens show fuel economy, fuel consumption history, an odometer, trip data, and coolant temperatures.Best fuel economy can be gauged through real time MPG information showing the driver which driving style is best.

The navigation system also houses the Hybrid Energy Flow Display.  This display will track the 5 modes of the Fusion’s Hybrid Powertrain which are the; electric drive, hybrid drive, electric boost, idle charging, and regenerative breaking.

Ford not only equipped the Fusion with an environmentally friendly drivetrain; they also used post-industrial yarns which are recycled into the seats of the Fusion Hybrid.Toyota and Honda have been selling thousands of hybrids per year unchallanged, better late than never with Ford.
